Natural airflow keeps kids cool

The Radisson display by National Homes has been designed to accommodation modern family living while also achieving a good result in terms of energy efficiency.
The home is organised into distinct zones, with the main suite and theatre to the front alongside the double garage and workshop, and three minor bedrooms, family bathroom and activity room in their own wing towards the rear. In between is the open-plan kitchen, living and dining area, which opens to the alfresco area.
GreenSmart principles were incorporated into the home, including passive-solar design to help regulate internal temperatures.
Energy management was taken into account from the initial design stages to achieve this rating, Mark Anderson, general manager of National Homes parent company BGC Residential, said.
The home showcases north-facing living areas to make the most of natural light. The location of the alfresco area also protects the main living are as from solar absorption in the evenings. An additional alfresco area in the childrens wing provides extra protection from the sun, and eaves to the remainder of the home allow maximum energy-efficiency through the whole design.
Throughout the home, airflow is maximised by the addition of the second alfresco area off the childrens activity area, which enables both sides of the home to be opened up to create natural airflow.
To further minimise use of mains electricity, the home has a 2kW photovoltaic cell system and a 300L gas-boosted solar hot water system.
To enhance water efficiency, all toilets have a minimum four-star Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards rating, basins and sinks are fitted with minimum four-star-rated tapware and showers with minimum three-star-rated showerheads.
Mr Anderson said BGC also aimed to educate homebuyers about energy and cost-saving measures in their new homes, and in partnership with the Sustainable Energy Association of Australia, had produced a guide to provide advice on how to operate their homes in a more energy-efficient way.
