A grand way to live your life

When National Homes named two of its most recent display homes the Waldorf and the Astoria, it did so intending to create a very particular mood. And although the two homes, which sit side by side on Dealy Elbow in Harrisdale, are a long way from New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel, the company has done well to capture the sense of luxury and quality for which the hotel is known.
The Astoria is the smaller of the pair, with its three-bedroom design cleverly making the most of every inch of space on the 10m-wide cottage home site. The stunning ensuite and dressing room to the rear-loaded main suite are two of several stand-out features.
It’s here that New York luxury is most readily called to mind, with a mirrored blade wall dividing the ensuite into a lavish bathroom on one side and a fully fitted long walk-in robe cum dressing room on the other.
The nearby L-shaped open living zone flows into two outdoor areas, each accessible via bi-fold doors. There is a covered alfresco area at the rear of the home, off the living room, and a second space off the meals area has been created in the display version as a little entertaining deck.
The sleek and compact designer kitchen, with an island bench/breakfast bar and 900mm European appliances, acts as the hub of the open zone. Elsewhere there is another bathroom, two double-sized minor bedrooms with built-in robes, a snazzy laundry, and a powder room and study off the entry hallway.
National Homes brand manager Tony Harvie said the premium level of fixtures and fittings in the home was impressive. The design, with the home office and a thoughtfully placed powder room at the front, would work well for people who liked to mix business and home life, with the ability to keep visitors to the front of the house.
“The fit-out by our interior designers, Coco Republic, is bright and fresh with a subtle Scandinavian feel,” he said. “The overall result is low- maintenance luxury living, with a sophisticated feel and bold elements that set the Astoria apart from other display homes.”
He said since the displays had opened in September there had been an exceptional level of interest in the designs. “The Astoria, we are finding, is providing a spacious and supremely livable design for narrow lots, as homestead-style blocks become harder and harder to find.”
The Astoria is priced at $240,813 as displayed, but can be built from $186,385.
